Leopard cats should not be confused with Leopards. These cats got their name from the spotted coat, which makes the animals look like small Leopards. Leopard cats are bigger than most domestic cats and weigh 2.5-4 kg with a body length of 44-100 cm. They often hybridize with domestic cats both in the wild and in captivity.
The coat color of Leopard cats is pale brown, tawny or gray with dark stripes and spots. The coat markings vary greatly in different varieties, depending upon the terrain in which they live. But all types of Leopard cats are spotted or ringed with black rosettes covering the sides of their body. The tail of all Leopard cats has a black tip. The undersides of these animals are white and marked with dark spots. There are two white stripes running up from the inside corner of the eyes and the chin is white.
Leopard cats in the northern parts have longer and thicker coats than the southern subspecies. The head of a Leopard cat is rather small with a narrow muzzle. The eyes of Leopard cats are very large and round. The irises are a deep, golden brown to grayish. The ears of Leopard cats are rather small with white spots on their backside to make the impression of eyes.
